Hayden Nickel

Samoan violinist Hayden Nickel is in his 4th year studying a conjoint degree of honours classical performance, under Helene Pohl of the NZSQ, and undergraduate education-psychology at Victoria University of Wellington.

Hayden began learning the violin at 6 years old and has since accumulated a breadth of orchestral experience, including many years in the Wellington Youth Orchestra, NZ Secondary School's Orchestra, NZSO National Youth Orchestra and various freelance gigs. In terms of chamber music, he has competed in the Chamber Music NZ Secondary School's competition four times, attended the Adam Summer School three times. In 2019, Hayden had the opportunity to perform the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with the Nelson Symphony Orchestra as a guest performance in their spotlight series.

Adjacent to his performance ambitions, Hayden's ultimate goal is as a teacher - to see more Pasifika and Maori faces in the classical music scene in New Zealand.
